Creating a Production
A Production in Kurator is where the experience gets defined with a referenced video or as an overlay. This is where SAMs get added and timed to the event.
On the left side are the different functional areas in Kurator. Clicking Productions will take you to the Productions library where you can open an existing production to continue making changes or updates, or click the [+ Create] button to create a new one.
Once clicked, you will enter information for the production itself:
- Name: The name of the production
- Slug: will autogenerate base on the Name but can be edited. All slugs need to be unique. Slugs can be used as part of the distribution link as an option.
- Media: Enter the YouTube or Vimeo ID in this field or a URL that ends in .mp4
- YouTube ID: ID is highlighted in orange: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u7EIiohs6U
- Kurator does support an ID with a time offset.
- Vimeo ID: ID is highlighted in orange: https://vimeo.com/440538641
- See this Help Desk article on supported Video Sources and settings.
- YouTube ID: ID is highlighted in orange: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3u7EIiohs6U
- Type:
- Overlay: Just the interactive experience can be published and can be added to any video defined in the publisher's distribution. For example, a SAM that describes and sells Truck tires can be programmatically added to any video about trucks.
- Video: The distribution will include the video being referenced from the Media ID.
Clicking [Submit] will take you to the next production overview screen:
- Name: Can be changed if needed
- Slug: display from the previous step. Cannot be edited.
- Username: Will autofill from the user logged into the account.
- Cover: This image will be used as part of the OGMeta when published. If the Production is using a YouTube ID, for example, it will pass through the OG Meta found.
- Media Source: If entered in the previous step it will be displayed here. This field is editable and the media source can be changed if needed.
- Type: This field will display what was selected in the previous step or can be changed here if needed.
- Settings: This area shows the JSON of settings that will be applied to the distribution whe published.
- Information: Display only of created and modification date.
When satisfied with the settings (or not), the upper right of the page allows for:
- Cancel: Cancel any work done up to this point
- Save: Save all. IN work done up to this point
- Edit Timeline: Continue to the timeline view of the production
The Timeline
Once the production is all set, you can now move on to the timeline view of Kurator. It is on this page that SAMs can be added, and timed to the video:
Clicking the [Add] button will display a view of all available SAMs. Either scroll through or use the Search field to find the desired SAM. Access SAMs within folders, or use the mult-select or Select-All then click the "Add Selected Items":
Once all SAMs have been added, click [Done] and the selected SAMs will appear in both the Events pane and the timeline all starting at 00:00:00 with a duration of 00:00:08 (8 seconds).
Editing the SAM
It can be common to notice during the production stage of adding SAMs to a video, that you need to edit a particular SAM. This can be done by clicking the pencil icon next to the SAM name in the Events pane:
Once the SAM has been updated and Saved, click the Return button to return to the production timeline:
Timing
When and for how long each SAM will display can be done via two methods. Regardless of which method used, the two interfaces are synced to reflect the same timings.
- The Events Panel
- The Timeline
The Events Pane:
- The timecode values are in Hours:Minutes:Seconds (HH:MM:SS). Kurator's granularity is down to the second when applying SAMs.
- Clicking the timecode number as-is will take you to that position in the video acting as a go-to function.
- Clicking the pencil next to the timecode value in any of the columns allows for editing of that timecode:
-
- Click in each field to change the value or enter all the digits at once and they will be parsed out. For example, with the HH field highlighted as seen above, entering 000100 and return/enter on your keyboard will result in 00:01:00. Or change just the field and click SET. Cancel will remove any changes.
- The Position column allows for the SAM to be displayed on either the left side or right side of the video when published. They can appear at the same time, but only one SAM can be opened at a time. A left-side SAM will open on the left, and right-side SAM will open on the right.
- The Pane can be sorted on any of the columns except Position to help with organization when kurating.
It is also possible to edit the START, END, DURATION, and POSITION for multiple SAMs at the same time. Select two or more SAMs, or select all of them. Once selected, there will be an edit pencil for those fields at the top of the Event Pane. Edit those as previously mentioned and the values will be applied to all selected:
The Timeline
The timeline is a graphical view of the events as they will appear over time. This can be handy to easily see which SAMs will overlap and be available at the same time or for those who like to trim events by clicking and dragging.
- Once an event is highlighted in the timeline:
- Clicking in the middle will allow you to drag the event to another moment in time while preserving its duration:
- Clicking the little white square to the left or right of the activated segment allows you to extend its duration by changing its START or END position:
Moving the red position bar will update the video viewer to that position and vice versa, moving the video player to a different position will update the read player bar.
The Video Preview
The video player allows for SAMs to be displayed as they will appear when the video is published. The video player can be resized to simulate how it might look on a mobile device when in portrait mode and the SAM appear below the video, or when the video has enough room to display vertically, how the SAMs will appear on the video.
Once all the SAMs are added and timed to your satisfaction, the production is ready to publish.
Creating a Link
Part of the publishing process is creating a link that can be used as either a direct link to the video or as part of an embed on a web page as documented here. Creating that link is done by going to the production library and clicking the Share icon in the tile view:
Productions Organization
Within the Productions library, Productions can be further organized within folders and folders within folders:
Clicking the blue folder icon with the + will create a new folder. Clicking the three buttons icon on each same (or all selected Production) allows them to be moved to any of the created folders. A folder can be created within a folder for further organization.
A folder can be renamed or deleted by clicking the three dots in the folder icon:
And selecting Rename or Delete. A folder containing items cannot be deleted. Move the items out beforehand if that folder needs to be deleted:
